What is that?

It's probably her glue bag (seen sniffing here)

Sandra, alone on a bench of the famous Praça da Sé (Cathedral Plaza) in the city centre, once a favourite hang-out for the many street children in São Paulo in 1993.

Rescuing street children is a painstaking, long-term job, where few organisations are willing to make such an investment. Could mean a long wait for children like Sandra above, already abandoned on the streets for some years.

See her today, ten years after this photo was taken.

I take photos for fun and for self-gratification and after seeing this I realise how shallow that all seems. I'm not saying that mine isn't important; it is to those families who's children I'm documenting, but...This is the stuff that makes you THINK. and hopefully...ACT. As a mother, seeing this is painful. I want to help. How can I help?

Don't underestimate your reasons for making records for the children who will one day probably become responsible adults and enjoy looking back at those photos - and remember, just as mine enjoy doing with these important records of their past life.

this truly makes my heart ache!! I have tears in my eyes just looking at this image. How could anybody abandon a child? I'm sure they themselves were incapable of taking care of her so what were their options right? I'm sure things are much different there than in the US where you can leave a child at the hospital (although that is terribly sad also). I can't image leaving my child at all !! much less on the streets to take care of herself. I pray for these children...I think we all take what we have for granted.

I like to capture pain and sorrow. But it seems as though, many people capture it if it's not something tangible, someone or something close to them. If I could carry a camera with me everywhere, at any time, I would capture all emotions and moments. But how do you do it and be sensitive to those you're capturing? My most memorable memories are pictures in my mind that fade away in time. Those are the memories I want to print out on paper.
