When I was in northeast Brasil this past month (I got back home on Saturday) I helped out with the extreme poor and street kids with my friend and the group he works with or just on our way. You're absolutely right, these kids need to get off the streets more than anything else! Of course, I would never give them money b/c it would go to drugs. I met tons of Brazilians there in Recife who helped the huge number of street kids. Unfortunately, I also met other Brazilians that I did not exactly agree on and I would like to hear your opinions. I was walking around on an extremely hot day with a cool drink. This street boy came up looking VERY fatigued and reached for my drink so I gave it to him. A girl said that I should not do that. I talked to 2 other Brazilians who said what I did was fine. She said it attracts him to the streets, well the kid is already on the streets and I'm not going to drink cool water in front of a kid who looks severely dehydrated whether he's a Brazilian street kid or a wealthy kid. A child is a child. Also, she also said never to give them food and was mad at my friends Mateus and Joao b/c they bought these kids food who asked for it b/c their parents can buy. True, many street kids have parents and their parents make them go out to sell to get food (unless this is a misconception) but it was 1am, these kids weren't going home. I'd just like to know your opinion about the water bottle incident and the incident where I talked to 1 of the street kids and another girl said not to talk to them cuz they are trash kids. It's not the child's fault for being on the streets. I talked to the kid and got him to go to the church and sleep there instead of on the street corner. We'll talk later.
Have a good day : )

This is beautiful. Ocean waves make children of us all.
I lived in Bahia for more than 7 years and in response to matkaantytto, I would never deny water to anyone with thirst but in my experience (and in praise of Gregory's work) I have to paraphrase an old proverb: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will never go hungry."
Many of Brazil's social problems stem from poverty and ignorance and it's hard to know where to begin to resolve them. All I could do was to teach a kid a simple skill, give him or her a simple chore and reward them for learning or helping. Building self-esteem is a start.

@Eric Feathers and Matkaantytoo,
....continuing along the lines of that well-known proverb Eric, we try as best we can at Hummingbird to teach our kids how to fish. It is the only way they will never need to go hungry.
Today was my first normal working day with all my staff back at Hummingbird, after their well-earned summer holidays. What better news am I brought than that from Célio, one of my youth scholarship holders, who helps teach our kids music and guitar. Célio has been supported with a so-called Youth Capacity Building Scholarship these last eighteen months (several Flickr members contribute on a monthly basis towards these scholarships as we have 23 such youth in our programme). Our aim is to create new capacities within our programme, youth agents of social change within their own communities.
Célio above, is one such agent and a good one at that.
With a near "broken heart" and very reserved feelings about his decision, Célio waited for hours today, just to exchange a few personal words with me and express his feelings. He told me of the difficult choice he had now taken to leave his position as a scholarship holder at Hummingbird due to other responsibilities he had taken on. Knowing that he comes from a particularly difficult family situation with many smaller brothers and sisters, I asked Célio why he had chosen to leave so suddenly. He then explained how during the holidays he had entered a major song contest arranged by a professional recording company here in São Paulo, competing against 36 other groups and had managed to win first place, where upon he had just signed a 3-year registered recording contract, which would pay him a guaranteed minimum monthly wage of approx. $800,00.
Now for an 18-year old kid from utmost poverty in Brazil, who comes from a family trying very hard to survive on the occasional odd jobs for his parents and a fraction of that amount to live on each month, Célio was of course overwhelmed by this opportunity. He had won the contest with the music he had recorded here at Hummingbird's own little studio and was reserved about his decision because he felt he was abandoning the organization that had lifted him from almost nothing and given him the capacity to realize his dreams. He really didn't want to leave all that behind because he loved what he was doing here.
Of course I was saddened to know that we will be losing a great kid who means a lot for other kids here at Hummingbird, but at the same time I shared this optimistic fisherman's hopes for a bigger catch.
I told him exactly what you just mentioned above Eric, that I was so happy to hear this wonderful news and to know that we had eventually managed to teach him how to go fishing.
Matkaantytoo,
How one acts towards street children on the streets requires the use of common sense. Here is a great story about just how difficult it is when we, the public, are faced with this tragic situation.
Thank you both for your in-depth comments! - Gregory

i think we are mutual admirers of each others' work. i love your shots!! this one is lovely.
matkaantytto [deleted] (77 months ago | reply)
i agree with the fishing, but saying "go forth my son and find a job to pay for your own water bottle" wouldn't go well with a 7yr. old, so I just gave him the water bottle.
I call it, realistic fishing
matkaantytto [deleted] (77 months ago | reply)
that is a wonderful story and hopefully he will lead his family out of dire poverty. Great example of "fishing" hope to see more like it : )
matkaantytto [deleted] (77 months ago | reply)
obrigada, mas eu preciso ler dps pq agora tenho uma aula jaja.
bjus!
matkaantytto [deleted] (77 months ago | reply)
but what I am saying Greg is Mateus and Joao bought food for a young group of boys in the middle of the night. How would these boys, age 6-11 be able to get jobs to support themselves? Oh, they had a thing on the BBC a couple months back about this 11 yr. old Indian street boy who opened up his own "bank" for street kids, incredibly bright child.
Eric Feathers (77 months ago | reply)
Wonderful to hear a "success story" from Hummingbird. I know the mixed feelings you must have when it's time for one "to leave the nest." Parabens Celio!
matkaantytto [deleted] (77 months ago | reply)
I'm going to read it now...vou ler agora
matkaantytto [deleted] (77 months ago | reply)
I was just saying before this girl told me it is better to ignore street kids and do nothing for them, I disagree as do you, and believe we need to teach them "to fish", but sometimes realistically we cannot deny a child water. Also, her opinions were racial as well.

where is it?
santos?
carf (77 months ago | reply)
On the coast in the town of Santos (the main port that serves the country), 40 minutes from São Paulo. As a matter of fact it takes less time for us to take a trip to Santos by car than to get to the other side of town on an excursion, and so much more healthier! The evenings there can sometimes be very "tropical".
