Hummingbird Spreads Its Wings - XXII
16-year old Célio is one of our youth scholarship holders; he is also a guitarist and singer in the Banda Beija-Flor. Scholarship holders like Célio are youth who have been with our programme for a certain amount of time, grown with it and shown a dedicated interest in the activities they participate in. They are also youth who are identified as possible multipliers of our programme.
Once identified as a scholarship holder they are obliged to take an active role in the development of the activities they are part of, assisting in the further education of younger children coming under their wings in the programme. It seems that the methodology we use, basing our entire programme on youth entrepreneurship, is starting to have an impact on the kids who participate under the guidance of our youth mentors and their multipliers. The actions of these young people are much more organic than what we see from formally educated social professionals, who usually have a middle-class background and are accustomed to an entirely different Brazil than the Brazil our kids are facing, a reality they will probably still have to face for a long time.
