this photo is too precious for words. Btw, my mother calls you a saint. I'm going back to Brazil this year, and I've brought a lot of necessities for the street kids and would like to spend time with them. I would like to know your opinion on Brazilian adoptions? Just to let you know, I think trying to keep a child in his/her own country or reuniting them with their family is best, but aside from that what do you think of foreigners adopting from Brazil? I ask because here in the US and Canada it seems every1 is for adopting from China. I got into quite a heated debate today over the fact that I feel that Brazilian street children, and others, such as Colombian and Liberian, are being neglected for Chinese adoptions.
What is your opinion Gregory?

@matkaantytto,
I'm glad you like the image, this kid was simply so photogenic that I had to capture him in so many different situations. His relationship with the dog was fascinating as I'm sure the viewers understand from this series.
Your mother flatters me, but I can assure you I'm only a simple human-being doing what I believe in to make this world a slightly better place.
Street kids on the streets don't need material gifts, they (only) need to get off the streets. All gifts on the streets, no matter what, will only attract even more kids to the streets. Please save your gifts for an organization working to remove the kids from the streets because they will probably make better use of your gifts than the kids on the streets.
Adoptions are fine if they are to benefit a child at risk of growing up in an institution, but I think foreign adoptions should be limited to very young kids (babies) who have not yet started to identify themselves with the culture they were born into. I have seen several shocking examples of older kids who were adopted from Brazil with tragic consequences due to many unexpected frustrations that adoptive parents were not prepared for, especially with street kids. I myself have several Brazilian foster children who have grown up here, but would never dream of leaving this country for good to live with them in some other culture, although they have visited abroad and enjoyed it, like any other kid would. Family, either close or extended, is of great importance to most children in Brazil and such relationships should be preserved if and when possible. All my fosterkids (former street kids) have rebuilt their relationships with their biological families.
I suppose the focus on China has a lot to do with their policy on unwanted girls, which is tragic. If foreign adoptions will help alleviate the situation of unwanted babies I see nothing wrong with it. I don't think other countries are being neglected because of the Chinese focus, there are just a lot more babies available, that's all.

I would say it is nearly impossible for any foreigner abroad to successfully adopt a Brazilian street kid from the streets and I would certainly go against any such attempts. Any child taken from the streets, from any country I suppose, would first need to go through an extremely complex rehabilitation process, which a foreign adoptive parent living in another culture would have extreme difficulties dealing with. Changing a street kid's life around does not mean simply giving that child a better lifestyle and loving parents, there are many childhood traumas that need to be tackled during the long and slow process of growing up. Things that can only be dealt with if they can retain contact with their own culture and reality. I suppose I could write a book on the subject because I have myself been fosterfather for more than ten former brazilian street kids here in Brazil the last 14 years, and although I'm a foreigner, I have made extremely good use of my cultural surroundings.

I hope I've answered your questions, just use my Flickr mail if you wish to know anything else. - Gregory

Yes, Greg, you SHOULD write a book. Seriously. Or at least publish a photo book with corresponding stories. I believe it would be very successful. ( I am a media consultant that helps people publish their projects - books, CDs, DVDs, websites, etc. - if you ever require assistance let me know.)

Hi Gregory,

btw my name is Meg. : ) Thanks so much for your email. Sorry, I didn't clarify. All the necessities I bought are going to an agency my Brazilian friends help at because of exactly what you said. : )

What is your favourite photo out of all of yours? : )

You're from Norway?
Posted 37 months ago. ( permalink )

matkaantytto [deleted] says:

Yes, you answered it very well. I forgot to say, if I adopted from Brazil, I'd prefer to just live in Brazil. Not only for that reason, but because even with all of Brazil's problems, it's still one of the best places I've been.

Thank you so much for your help! : )
What about foreigners who adopt from let's say Russia, Romania, Brasil (wherever) but they go back to the child's home country often? Do you think it makes a difference? Although, I do agree. Keeping a child in his own country and trying to reunite with his own family is best.

I have been here before, put it in my favorite to check later...but I am glad you have visited me. Yes,,I do love Norway..it is a pretty country.Your work is very interesting..I was thinking last night...I want to move back to Br...I do miss helping those who need. In a way I am ashamed that foreigners go to Br to help our people..because the government doesnt care as much as it should. But at the same time it is a blessing that so many foreigners care.
I loved the explanation you left about the places...thank you so much!
