Brother in waiting...
No matter the hardships, a new family member is always made welcome...
See text in previous images for this series.
As a single mother in Brazil, Paula's life is far from easy.
The hardships she has gone through after having to face yet another
pregnancy and the consequently difficult situation she now finds
herself in after not having been attended by the government's
sterilization programme, where she has been on the waiting list since
her last born, can be felt deep into my heart each time I visit her
and share her pains.
We are now helping Paula to raise her head just a little higher and for the cost of 600-800 dollars, together with the helpful volunteer manpower of equally situated neighbours, we are reconstructing her home with some solid brick walls, a non-leaking roof and a cement covered floor, so that at least she can economize some of her energy in trying to keep a dry roof over her head and a clean floor during each windy rainstorm on the hilltop where she lives in her simple hut.
If anyone would like to assist us with a contribution towards covering this cost, please feel free to access our Changemakers Campaign Page where this can be done as quick as you read this text. (please mention Paula's Home when making a contribution). So far my appeal has raised $400 from the Flickr community and if we receive more than what we have spent we'll buy her a few household items for the rest of the money, which I'm sure she would most appreciate.
Thanks a lot!
Gregory

Sweet, but this constant pregnancy of single mums is a major reason for why Americans and Brazilians are staying in poverty. I teach at a school that is 100% poor. 98% of the children were born to young single mums, had the mums NOT been pregnant there would've been a chance at getting out of poverty for these young ladies, at least in the US.

Gregory this is a powerful shot! Really awesome. Actually is is an award winning shot in my book!
Matkaantytto, I believe that you are on the right track...the more education a woman (or girl) has the less children she has (so say the statistics). Thus it is not a short term fix but I believe one of the more powerful means to solve this problem. In Costa Rica it is very evident that high education = 1 to 2 kids per family and none or little equals many kids. We just left a home of a woman with 6 kids and a 7th on the way. She is 22! No education at all for herself. Luckily, her school age kids are in school and even more lucky is that they are doing well. It will be interesting to see how their kids turn out (or how many they have). It is a family worth tracking for sure.

Kathy,
The situation you describe for Costa Rica is very much the same as we face in Brazil, where the educational statistics from the last national consensus show that Brazil's illiteracy rate is amongst the highest in Latin America. The dropout rate in Brazil is very high; 33 out of every 100 students who enter grade one make it to grade six. The numbers continue to drop in high school as well.
No doubt that education is the key to a healthier birth rate.
The kids in your program will for sure reap the benefits of what you are doing for and with them, as have done so many of the children in our own programs after 14 years of Hummingbird education.
Our kids tend to lead a totally different life than many of their previous family members did, who often ended up in prison or met an early and violent death due to the situations they got involved in; streets, drugs and crime. Many adolescents in our program are now concluding their basic schooling and seeking superior education in the hope of better job opportunities.

Hi my name is Meg. Nice to meet you. : ) I have been to Costa Rica and Brazil to help. Lovely places full of amazing culture and people. While the poverty in the US is not the same, although if you've ever been to Mississippi it's horrendous, I have noticed that growing up poor in America too. I knew girls who by 18 had 3 kids. You're absolutely right, the less education, the more pregnancy. While I believe Paula is a caring mother, and every baby is a blessing, it puts such a struggle on Paula's life that could've been prevented through protection or no sex (unless it was forced sex).
I wish Paula, and all single mothers, the best of luck. I have nothing against single mothers, some end up pregnant even after very little sex and a lot of protection, I only get a bit annoyed at the ones who use lots of sex and no protection, and bring another child in this poor world to struggle and die young. I do not know Paula's story, so I will not judge. I only wish her family the best of luck.
Love and light : )
pra todos
Meg

Our kids tend to lead a totally different life than many of their previous family members did.
This is why I LOVE hummingbird and programs I help at in other places worldwide.
I work with ghetto children in the US. It's amazing to see them go on to secondary school and then hear about them going to college or even graduating high school because what the Boys and Girls Club and school have instilled in them, instead of how they grew up young, in cars with 17 yr old moms.
