Day 259 - Call me a Pedant If You Want...
I do a lot of editing in my job.
The wrong use of the apostrophe really annoys me.
So - FGR - Be warned! It's one of My Pet Peeves.

Oh, I do love this. Then there's the tricky plural nouns like men which becomes men's -- not mens'. Great choice!

I love a pedant, one of my pet peeves, although secretly it also entertains me, is misspelt menus. In Norfolk I once asked the waitress, "How Early is the Early Grey tea"
She didnt know.
Love this!

This is a biggie for me too! (hence the username and my "superhero" photo the other day)
Though I do give people who don't care about grammar a little slack on day-to-day stuff, but when it comes to publications, large blogs, important emails, etc. I'm a HUGE stickler for grammar and punctuation. Get with it, people!
Have you read "Eats, Shoots and Leaves"? It's amazing. :)

i'm the grammar police around here, too. where do you stand on the oxford comma?
Menage a Moi (45 months ago | reply)
No - haven't read ES & L - heard about it though.
I tend not to use it unless it would confuse my dog, Alfie and Fuggers....

♥EMILY♥ : That annoys me as well - also when people can't tell their, there and they're apart... >_<
Menage a Moi: It's quite easy to tell its and it's apart. If you can replace it with his or her then it's its. If it's short for it is, then it's...well it's.

Ermm - like telling my left from my right...

Meh, I shouldn't be talking so much. I know my grammar isn't top notch! :)

I'm somewhat of a perfectionist myself and it drives me crazy when other make grammatical mistakes like that.
Great shot, man!

Aww, the apostrophe - that annoys me too! Funnily enough my pet peeve SP today is the loss of the adverb.

You know, this is one grammatical thing I can never quite figure out. Is the possessive of Chris Chris's or Chris'? Is it peoples' or people's? With most other grammar questions I'm aware of the correct way of doing things, but this one always kinda throws me for a loop.

What do you think of Tesco and the "10 items or less" saga?
susiejulie (45 months ago | reply)
yay grammar and correct apostrophe usage!
(speaking of french, i tend to think the pronunciation of 'apostrophe' in french instead of english [i'm a native english speaker]). :)
SAMBoddy (45 months ago | reply)
ah yes, the tricky trickster that is the apostrophe. You know, if they would write a rule and then apply it consistently, I would probably 'get' it. But they don't and so I'm sure I break at least one grammar rule a day. At least...

Menage a Moi and Jeff the Trojan: Both versions are possible, they just have a different meaning. People's means belonging to everyone, for instance the People's Republic of China.
When using peoples' it means people as in different races or nations, for example you might refer to the peoples of Papua New Guinea - and their traditions are the Papuan peoples' traditions.
Can you tell that I did Latin in school for six years? ;-)

Grammar isn't always my strongest suit - I get slightly nervous when corresponding with overseas friends who have an in depth knowledge of Latin - but I always aim to get this apostrophe lark right. Errors are frequently appearing on official notices now.
