Grandpa's Camera

Grandpa's Camera by hoveringdog.
Nottingham, UK -- A Canon EOS of some sort, better than my camera, I'm sure ... Decided to add this one to Cream of the Crop as my best of 2005. I know it's not my most popular photograph of the year, but there's something about this moment, about photography, about community ... Well, I like it.

You do wonders with yours. It ain't the equipment.

I agree that equipment isn't everything, but I did miss some really promising shots today that I could have gotten had I a faster autofocus.

Understand. But sometimes limitations are the key to it all.

Just look at the richness in tones...to die for. You can almost see the thread count in that fabulous jacket. Superb shot...

Anyway, for me it's the human story that this is all about. For some reason - perhaps a good one - I instantly thought of a classic photo of Prince Charles as a toddler earnestly talking to his grandfather - George VI, who didn't live much longer. Here I'm looking at the cooky - held carefully away in case the he gets the camera all sticky? ... and the other people on the edge of the picture - not involved with kid and grandpa's moment - and perhaps fed-up?

I think the image says it all, almost a story in itself. I may have entitled this pic "G'wan grandad, giz a go...", but then I am a little uncouth like that. :o)

Great story indeed!
What is strange in this photo is the hand in the corner: at first look it seems the kid's right hand!

Yeah, I wish there had been an easy way to crop out some of the clutter on the edge. I don't mind the face in the back, but the hand in the front does look a bit odd.

a classic scene. I do like the face in the back and hadn't noticed the creepy hand in front until it was mentioned.

This photo has been included on iPods sent to US Senators as part of the iPac "Your Senator needs an iPod" program.

(Apparently they send iPods to Senators to educate them about intellectual property issues in the digital age; they've included 101 Creative Commons-licensed Flickr images on the iPods. I've got nothing to do with them, except that one of my images was included as well.)
