Reflected Rocks

After 24 years again a visit at the Externsteine, Holzhausen, Germany with my family during my holidays in Bielefeld.

The Externsteine are a distinctive rock formation located in Ostwestfalen-Lippe of northwestern Germany, not far from the city of Detmold at Horn-Bad Meinberg. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. The name probably means "stones of the Egge", Egge meaning ridge.
The Externsteine are a natural outcropping of five sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is 37.5 m (123 ft) high and form a wall of several hundred metres in length, in a region that is otherwise largely devoid of rocks (Wikipedia)

The name "woolsack weathering" is derived from the similarity beetween weathered stones and stacked feed bags or woolsacks.(Information Center Externsteine)

Nach 24 Jahren war ich während meines Urlaubs in Bielefeld mal wieder bei den Externsteinen.

Die Externsteine sind eine markante Sandstein-Felsformation im Teutoburger Wald und als solche eine herausragende Natursehenswürdigkeit Deutschlands. Innerhalb Nordrhein-Westfalens im Kreis Lippe gelegen gehören sie zu Horn-Bad Meinberg und sind von einer parkartigen Anlage umgeben. (Wikipedia)

Das außergewöhnliche Gefüge der einzelnen Felsen entstand durch eine besondere Art der Verwitterung. Spannungen in der Erdkruste zerklüfteten den Felsen und führten zu Rissbildungen. Eindringende Feuchtigkeit gefror in den Spalten. Der Spaltenfrost sprengte das Gestein, weitere die Risse und rundete die Kanten der Felsblöcke. Regenwaser schwemmte Gesteinspartikel aus. So entstanden die charakteristischen Kissenformen. Die Geologie beschreibt dieses Phänomen als "Wollsack-Verwitterung". (Information Center Externsteine)
