Fairytale Castle - Burg Eltz, Germany

Burg Eltz is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River
between Koblenz and Trier, Germany. It is still owned by a branch of
the same family that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations
ago. The Rübenach and Rodendorf families' homes in the castle are open
to the public during the summer month, while the Kempenich branch of
the family uses the other third of the castle.
The castle is surrounded on three sides by the Elzbach River, a
tributary on the north side of the Moselle. It is situated on a 70m
rock spur, on an important Roman trade route between the rich farm
lands and their markets.
The main part of the house consists of the family portions. At up to
eight storeys, these eight towers reach heights of between 30 and 40
meters. They are fortified with strong exterior walls; to the yard
they present a partial framework. About 100 members of the owners'

After all Burg Eltz beautified for many years the back of the 500 DM
banknote (German currency).
Die märchenhafte Burg Eltz bei Wierschem in Rheinland-Pfalz gilt als eine der schönsten Burgen Deutschlands. Die Burg wurde
wahrscheinlich zu Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts erbaut. Gemeinsam mit
dem Schloss Bürreshe ist sie die einzige Anlage in der Eifel, die
niemals erobert oder verwüstet wurde
Die Burg wird auf drei Seiten von der Elz umflossen und ragt auf einem
bis zu 70 Meter hohen, elliptischen Felskopf empor, der für die
gesamte Burg als Fundament diente. Die Erbauer orientierten sich bei
der Anlage an der natürlichen Form der Felsformation.
Vor 1268 kam es unter den Brüdern Elias, Wilhelm und Theoderich zu
einer Stammesteilung. Dabei wurden die Burg und die dazugehörigen
Güter unter den drei Brüdern aufgeteilt; hieraus ergaben sich später
die drei Hauptlinien Rübenach, Kempenich und Rodendorf. Die Burg Eltz
war fortan eine Ganerbenburg. Noch heute sind die verschiedenen
Teilbauten der Burg nach diesen drei Hauptlinien benannt.
Seit nunmehr 800 Jahren befindet sich die Burg im Besitz der Familie
Eltz. Der jetzige Eigentümer der Burg ist Dr. Karl Graf und Edler Herr
von und zu Eltz-Kempenich genannt Faust von Stromberg.
In den Sommermonaten ist die Burg im Rahmen einer Führung zu

DM Geldscheines.

Ich finde, die Burg Eltz gehört zu den schönsten Burgen in Deutschland. Kein Wunder also, dass sie auf dem 500-DM-Schein abgegildet war. Die Aufnahme ist super geworden, tolle Farben und klasse Licht!
