My proposal

Apple's official variant

This is what I initially expected from the new Mail buttons.

I kind of like them glassy. But you're right about the active/inactive state. You can't make a bloody difference.

I like your design more than the glassy one, and I am really happy Apple removed most glass. But didn't these buttons have to be more angled to fit the finders buttons?

Interesting observation, given that Apple once had this button style in Mail.app (in the development builds). There was a lot of ado about it after the SteveNote at WWDC 2006; honestly, I thought it looked worse than they are now, but it's still quite bad.
