    Having someone help with the lighting and triggering the shutter, sitting really, really still and about an hour and a half worth of trial and error.

    It's a 27 second exposure, and the low ISO actually helps by only exposing the shot bit by bit. That's why my face looks still, even though I was blinking all throughout the exposure: my face only got exposed/lit while the sparkler was right in front of my face. Wich is also why my eyes are closed: not because I wanted them to look like that in the end, but because I didn't want to catch any sparks on my retinae. :-P
