Cracker jack caterpillar

Trying to attract monarch caterpillars on nearby milkweed, these black swallowtails take up temporary residence on my garden dill. As quickly as they appear, they disappear - no chrysalis, no butterfly. Maybe lunch for the birds? It's a mystery.
