Algonquin Provincial Park is the southernmost territory of the Gray Jay/Whiskey Jack. These boisterous birds hide food during the summer to feed them throughout the winter. It is believed that they find the food from memory. They apply copious amounts of spit (yum) to the food and hide it throughout the forest. They also nest as early as February. Sadly their numbers are declining quickly at Algonquin. Since the 1970's their population has decreased by half. Every year one nesting area is left vacant. This beautiful jay had four tags - green, pink, white and silver. Because of their declining numbers they are tagged for study and hopefully to help them from joining so many other species that we have lost forever. The white in the background is snow on the trees.

My weekly check-in!! Off to check out your images ;+)

Black-Capped Chickadee

Black-Capped Chickadee

Winter visitor eyeing the sumac seeds!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful winter. Missing you all. I'm still very busy so just dropping in today to let you know I'm still alive. Have been checking your images while off just no time to comment. Will catch up a little today. Winter has finally caught up to us although up until yesterday it was really mild with little snow and even less sunshine.

We did manage a couple of day trips - one to Algonquin and one to Hamilton in search of the King Eider (no luck)!! The only good thing was I met up with Rui in Hamilton - one of my contacts!

Corinne - I know you are missing these adorable birds while in Florida - LOL!!

Sanderling

Clam shells had washed up on shore or were left by fishermen who were using them as bait and they were a favorite of several species of shorebirds.

After tonight I will be off of flickr working on year ends and taxes. I will peek in when I get a chance and hopefully be able to post an image every once in a while to take the edge off :+(

Happy early Wannabe Warmer Wednesday #5

Happy early Wannabe Warmer Wednesday #5

Wood Duck Drake to help celebrate #5! Posting early so I don't miss W.W.W.

Late today - having all sorts of problems - first I couldn't upload to flickr - then I could upload but couldn't add a title or description or tags or view my image in large or original, now my keyboard is acting up and missing letters - very frustrating (changed the batteries and didn't help). I posted a topic on flickr and someone advised me to empty my cache - which I did and it seemed to help somewhat - so I may be slow getting around to your images tonight as typing and then retyping is going to be a pain :+((
