that appears to be former congressman lane evans (d-il), who didn't seek reelection a few years back because of the serious effects of parkinsons that he is experiencing

Rodrigo Perez -- this is the Flickr account of the Obama campaign, so he probably didn't upload these, but people on his staff did!

The man he is speaking with is former U.S. Rep. Lane Evans of Illinois, who represented a northwestern Illinois district for more than 20 years until felled by Parkinson's Disease.

Dear Mr. President,
you are the first African American president. Our country has taken a large step forward in diversity. However, your staff team has not. I have noticed that everyone you're picking is Jewish. Where is the diversity in your cabinet? As an American, I have spoken to many others who are wondering why you are not also hiring Catholics, women, and other African Americans besides Jewish Americans.
Many Americans also feel that because of such a strong Jewish staff that talks with Iran will be non-existent and any aid to the millions of starving and ill Palestinians will continue to go ignored. We are not saying to not have a Jewish staff member, but what we are saying is please diversity your staff by having a woman and a non-Jewish (perhaps an Arab American) member as well.
Thank you,
M.D
PS. Furthermore, the decisions by an entirely or nearly entirely Jewish staff may not actually reflect the feelings and opinions of the majority of Jewish Americans.

@foreignobsessed: and someday, we'll evolve beyond counting race, religion, etc. There was a time that if a woman or a black man was hired, we assumed it was race or sex, not skill. Obviously, you're still keeping tally, as though religion of his staff matters more than skill. There are more ways to get hired than being black, jewish, or female: you credit the president-elect with some ability to judge character, but you second-guess his cabinet. tsk tsk.
Gilgongo (43 months ago | reply)
@chickenandporn: I think her point relates to foreign policy. This, and the idea that Middle Eastern nations such as Iran are just as obsessed with race and religion and you think *she* is. Politically, I would imagine that the vast majority of Arabs would have no problem with America were it not for their lavish support of Israel. Personally, I am not worried by the number of Jews in the Obama cabinet, but I do think that a prominent Arab American would be a wise choice if the right person could be appointed.

Yes that is Lane Evans - used to be my congressman until I moved to Chicago from Moline... even spoke at my grade school a few times.
Any chance of getting a higher resolution version of this? I would love to hang this picture by my desk.

@foreignobsessed: I'm confused - you ask newly-minted President-elect Obama, "Where is the diversity in your Cabinet?" but he doesn't have one yet! Yes, he has hired Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff, and it is likely that his campaign team (e.g., Axelrod, Plouffe) will get high-level staff positions, but mostly there is just a lot of speculation right now.
There are approx. 20 Cabinet offices and Cabinet-level admin offices, as well as numerous ambassadorships, etc., to fill. Names being mentioned include John Kerry, Caroline Kennedy, Bill Richardson, Janet Napolitano, Colin Powell, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
How about we all take a deep breath and let the man be on the (pre-) job for maybe a week before we jump all over him?

To our most admired President-elect OBAMA,
My husband and I had been keeping track of you in the TIMES Magazine long before you threw your hat into the political arena.(We were still in the Philippines then, some two years back.)
Finally, we came here in March this year. We saw every detail of your political journey...from the primary 'til the end of the race.
The only reason for my browsing my email account @yahoo was to read and be updated of the latest development of your presidential bid.And although we are new immigrants and cannot vote, yet our hearts and spirits were with you all the time(and we know, majority of the Filipinos were behind you all the way.)
Many a times, my husband and I wanted to share the little that we have for the cause for which you fought;that is of bringing the much-needed change for America. But we weren't able to do that.(The family with whom we are living is Republican-leaning.)
All that we did was PRAY and the Lord has heard our fervent prayer!
Praise the Lord for giving America the MAN of the HOUR!!!
We love you Mr.PRESIDENT!

It is with our fervent hope and prayers that the President we have been rooting for the last 2 years is finally here.
Congratulations, President-Elect Obama.
We hope you will help resolve the Sri Lankan ethnic problem due to corrupt and racist governments It is high time, civil war when a people fight for their freedom is recognised as such, and not as terrorism. The Sri Lankan civil war and fight for freedom is similar to East Timor and Kosovo, etc...
Despot govts (incl the army and police chiefs), like those in Sri Lanka should be brought to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for their genocide and war-crimes.

Congratulations Mr. President-elect Obama. I have been a loyal democratic party since I've received my U.S. citizen in January 2001. The morning of Nov. 4th, before I went to work I prayed that you'll win the election. Most of us in my department at work voted for you except my supervisor she's a loyal Rep. I've wacthed your speech only the almost ending part and as I recall you've said " this is gonna be a long road for us to fix the crisis" and I agree with you. Once again congratulations and hoping all people would ask and pray to God to give you wisdom and guidance with all you do for this country.

To all above: It is with happiness that I read all the positive comments about your new president. Not only he has to face a huge challenge by correcting the country's past mistakes, but also live up to all your hopes. I wish you keep supporting him throughout his mandate.
But also, everything above has to be taken as a constructive comment, and whether you disagree or agree, all are valid comments for a better world! May America remember that it is not alone on this planet, listen to others before telling them what is right or wrong!

@foreignobsessed: Maybe you should get a little USAobsessed and notice that no one has been picked yet for the cabinet!
After 8 years with no Jews in the cabinet, I have not seen such great strides in the Middle East. Also, take it from this retired Civil Servant, religion is left at the door in the US when you go to your job in public service. I think the rest of the world appreciates that as much as we do - or at least is surprised by it. I think some may be surprised to find that race is also checked at the door in this administration.
YES WE DID!

Dear President-elect Obama,
Myself and my family are very happy for you, your family and especially the U.S.A. We have come "Oh" so far. In 1967 I gave birth to a beautiful bi-racial baby boy, his name is Barry also. My Barry grew up being told he could do anything he wanted. My sister and I never thought we would see the day that our somewhat "little white lie" would really come true. (at least not in our lifetime) My heart always knew I was telling the truth when I told him he could do or be anyone, but due to his race and different circumstances and obstacles that he faced, this might not happen. Your mother and grandmother were wonderful and strong women during a time in this world that it was not so easy to raise a bi-racial child.
I got the opportunity to meet Michelle, at Buchtel H.S. in Akron, Ohio. She is a beautiful and kind woman. Your mother would have been proud. Again, we are so, so happy and wish you all the luck and support that you truly deserve.

This Change has been more than inspirational...
It felt visceral. I cried the night of the election and I cry more now each time I see a further sign of how foundational this change is… it’s in all the comments here.
I’m a white sixty year old Canadian/British male, psychotherapist for 37 years. I want to comment from that perspective on where I believe we’re going from here.
Being moderately good at what I ‘do’ as a psychotherapist comes, I believe ;>) at least in part from my awareness of how we are all ‘split’. We are divided into differing sides of self - loving/fearful, awake/asleep, male/female, angry/defeated, forgiving/hateful - you name it. I work at healing that split in myself as well as in others (as they choose to!) We live, in those ways, in ‘duality’: we see ourselves as ‘just a body, mind and feelings here’ but we are also a ‘consciousness that animates this life process’.
In 1971 I saw perhaps one male to 30 women. These days I often have more men than women to book for therapy. That change parallels, I believe, what Barack’s election is saying we can achieve.
I grew up in a relatively privileged environment. Yet having been crippled at times by depression or anxiety, watching Obama I realized something fundamental. There is probably a part of each of the 6 and a half billion of us that has felt we Have To: 'sit at the back of the bus' - be vulnerable and have someone else in charge of our lives. Maybe the change he is facilitating is one we can each participate in. Maybe we can each risk being much more the Authors of our Own Stories… bridging our brokenness. I call it Switching Off Autopilot.

It seemed that the time had come even before the results was in. Finally, America has awaken up and put petty differences aside and choosen a president based on his policy and philosophy rather than the tint of his complexion. This world has enormous problems and it is time to face the problems togather as a nation and world community rather than a set of color struct bigots. I didn't live through slavery but my mother and all her siblings did and I remember the many stories of hardship and pain. I did live through segregation and it left a very distinct mark on my life. To see all this put behind us it truly seeing History being made. i only wish my parents and their siblings could see this and enjoy the moment.

Although, president-elect, Mr. Barack Obama has been very vocal about equality for everyone in the country -- that no one should be a second-class citizen and Colin Powell. famous statement "Why should it matter?! Muslims and Arab Americans are no less American than anyone else", American Muslims have been left out so far. Despite the fact that 95 percent of registered Muslim voters cast their ballots for Obama, at the end of this Presidential campaign and just 2 days before the inauguration, Arab and Muslims-Americans remain at the margins of US politics. The Arab and Muslims-American community they too came from immigrant backgrounds. They too cared about traditional values. It seems that the rewards of outreach to Arab and Muslim Americans are too slight to justify the risk at a moment when some people regard the idea that a candidate is “an Arab” as a damning indictment. I demand Obama administration to immediately suspend its generalized phobia of most things Muslim and Arab. America needs Arab-Americans and Muslim-Americans in positions of responsibility in our government -- and not just dealing with Arab-American and Muslim issues. This is important as America needs to keep open the doors of civic opportunity to all Americans however hyphenated.
