They are decidedly sombre. All that "booing" would not exactly be comforting.

This was a great moment to capture - nicely done. I can only imagine what Obama is thinking as he watches...

amazing shot! What a moment in history. McCain gave a classy speech, but Obama's was incredible. Congrats to everyone!

Intense moment. I was really feeling bad for McCain during his speech.

Great shot of a man trying to hold in his excitement. It's been a while since we've had a thoughtful man for a president. It's going to take some getting used to.

Terrific capture of a historic moment. What a perfect finale for this long campaign.

This is surreal... I pictured champagne corks popping, high fives, and jumping up and down...

Nice pic. What size lens?
L_K_M (43 months ago | reply)
Perhaps he's looking somber because he's not taking pleasure in another man's defeat. Popping champagne while a great (despite some of the nasty moments of his campaign) person like McCain admits defeat just seems heartless. I hope it's something most human beings would not do - people are just surprised because they are not used to seeing this kind of humility and humanity from an American President.
jmegawarne (43 months ago | reply)
McCain’s speech was gracious. But the reactions from the audience were embarrassingly infantile.
I would be sombre too, on either side of the political fence.

Historic change in America.
Through the media, we can all share in it.

what an amazing indicator of business not as usual. i can't remember having such a seemingly candid view of the new president (or any president)

I'm surprised at how few people are actually in the room. This man has a small, tight, inner circle.

A tribute to the integrity, thoughtfulness and goodness of the man. How nice to be represented by respect once again. These are fine people and I hope they are given the respect they deserve and the cooperation that will bring us back together and make our country great. I believe our country truly wants dignity, calm, and steadiness which he has exhibited throughout this difficult campaign and is reflected in this moment.

McCain did give a lovely speech. Made me realise what people were on about when they said that he had been a more likeable candidate back in 2000.

You know what I see? I see an incredible man actually listening.
He is not celebrating with champagne and noise makers because he is listening to his opponent's speech. They had differences and Obama bested this man at what I consider his [McCain's] own game. And yet, he wants to know what he has to say and how his supporters take it.
I truly believe that by showing this humble and gracious nature, he will truly listen to the American people.

This is breathtaking...seriously. It was, indeed, a gracious speech.

You know, I've never been one to spread, share, or even acknowledge emotions when it came to politics. Call me a defensive cynic, but I've always been that way. Yet, it seems that day has come for me. I list to this man, I observe his demeanor, his hands, his eyes, even what he is watching in this image and how is is watching it, and I really do effortlessly find it in myself to believe history can take a turn.
I and everyone I can convince will be there to help you, from close and from afar, but for the sake of hope and just the pride of being a human being and an American citizen, I really count on the fact that you are not just another mirage.

All the pleasure that some find in this photo can come crashing down in an instant if the man doesn't perform as "hoped." The majority of the comments I see here seems to be a perfect example of "Counting your chickens before they hatch."

I am one of the few Norwegians who supported both Barack Obama and John McCain for president. The speech by McCain was gracious, and tells alot about a candidate. The world would have been better of with McCain in 2000 instead of Bush.
Anyway, as I supported both candidates, I am happy that a worthy candidate is set to take over the world's most important political office next year.

Surely there was an official photog there with a hi-res camera for such amazing moments like this. These pics, although amazing, appear to be taken with a cell phone?

This is a great shot. Obama has a look of such quiet composure, one can only guess what he is feeling inside.
My heart went out to McCain when he gave his concession speech, but I was really bothered by all the booing. That was just rude and uncalled for.

What was achieved on Nov. 4th is truly a victory and in no way should it be seen otherwise within its' right. But not for the same reason it is also the spark which will ignite our constitution doused over the years with the fuel of dwelling liberties by the very people it was designed to protect.
