A Tale of Two Stained Glass Windows

A Tale of Two Stained Glass Windows

Two churches within the same community in the Alberta City area of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The tornado damage was from the April 27, 2011, tornado that hit Tuscaloosa and many other cities in Alabama and Georgia. These pictures were taken in January of 2012. The window on the left is from the Alberta Baptist Church. The church on the right is the Greater Faith and Victory Worship Center. There are many organizations working to help Tuscaloosa. Two that stood out to me are the United Saints from New Orleans and the Samaritan's Purse, a Franklin Graham organization.

Missing

Missing

The Greater Faith and Victory Worship Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The damage shown here was from the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa on April 27 of 2011. We were in Tuscaloosa in January and again in February. Most of the community around this church is still flattened, and most of the people who lived in this community did not have the means to recover easily from such a devastating blow. The United Saints from New Orleans, La, was working on the church the day we were there.

Grand Design

Grand Design

These old art deco theaters truly had grand designs. This is the Millwald Theater in Wytheville, Virginia. It opened on August 28, 1928, with the movie "Beau Broadway". Before it closed in 2006, it was the oldest operating movie theater in Virginia. In the 1950's Cold War, its basement served as a fully stocked bomb shelter. Also, it served as the scene for the announcement of presidental election results that came via Western Union telegraph wires.

A German barn that was a part of the Jacob Bushong farm in New Market, Virginia. The farm was the site of a Civil War battle, and it is now a part of the New Market Battlefield Museum.
