The computing section at Waterstone's

The computing section at Waterstone's by aralbalkan.
This was the entire computing section at the Waterstone's in the mall in Tunbridge Wells.

A sad reflection of the importance of computing education in the UK? Check out the other picture of the gardening section.

Not so. It's an encouraging reflection of their being so many good online resources for learning, that paying 40 quid for a book full of pictures of dialog boxes is no longer cutting it.

You could be right, Simon. Personally, I've just subscribed to Safari Bookshelf and I find myself looking there first. And there's Amazon.

I saw a Waterstones display of computer books which consisted almost exclusively of books on how to use Microsoft Windows and Office. I thought the reason people don't use Mac and Linux is because Windows and Office are *so* intuitive - evidently, ordinary people still need bloody great big tomes to explain these things.

Also, next time you find yourself in Tunbridge Wells, go to Hall's Bookshop in Chapel Place - second hand place with fiction and non-fiction covering every genre and topic you can imagine. I guarantee you that if you go in there with a tenner, you'll come out an hour or two later with a ton of interesting books.

It's the same in all of the Bristol stores. What's more, they're all beginners books. You won't find any books on compiler design, database administration or any other hardcore reference books, which you'd think would be a big requirement of the huge student population in Bristol
