V.J. Day Times Square

V.J. Day Times Square by Balakov.
A Lego recreation of Alfred Eisenstaedt's 1945 photograph "V.J. Day Times Square".

Original here.

Setup shot here ... www.flickr.com/photos/balakovsetup/2321704830/

I'm not sure Lego make any real sailor minifigs, the best I could managed was this airline pilot. The girl is a nurse minifig :)

Print available on Redbubble.

This is charming. Just a couple of thoughts:

1. In the original the right leg of the nurse is outflung which is the opposite of what you have done with outfleng left leg of the lego.

2. I might try getting the figures in the background in focus as well as that's the way they appear in the original.

Great work.

pfong may be right, but the photo is instantly recognizable. Valid critiques aside, this is great work.

@pfong : Thanks for the comments. I had terrible difficulty in posing the figures, Lego figures really don't want to embrace! I actually removed the girl's right arm so I could get them a bit closer. The pose that they're in was the best compromise of composition and "not falling over" :)

As for the lack of DOF, it looked a bit cluttered when I increased it. The focal length I used was mildly telephoto and squished everything in too close. All the figures appeared approximately the same size and It was just a bit messy. Maybe one day I'll get that 35mm Macro I've been looking at :)

Thanks for the critique.

Great work. And as a Lego fan, the first thing I thought after "that's awesome!" was "wait...where's her right arm?" Thanks for clearing that detail up!

Balakov,

I'm not qualified to critique your excellent work :-)
Just some thoughts on what I might try.

I wonder whether you could "cheat" to get the leg right leg outflung by using blu-tak to anchor her torso to the sailor.

I like this a lot, very creative. Directing lego people is never going to be easy, despite the problems with positioning etc. they are a wilfull bunch.

this is better than unicorns! it's very romantic – amputated limbs and all :)
the one thing i'm missing from the original shot is the streamers falling through the air... it's possible i'm making that up, but i seem to remember so clearly how they captured the dream-ike jubilation of the moment. i have no idea how you could recreate something like that, but i imagine it would be quite difficult.
