When I was 19 years of age, I took off with my brother Ruben for a 2-month journey to China. It was 1985, and the country was very different from today. We entered from Hong Kong to Gangzhou, took a ferry on the river, then a long bus ride to Yangshuo/Guilin, the train to Kunming, and a van to Dali and its pagodas. From there it was back to Kunming and by train to Emei and the Emei Shan. Then by train to Chengdu, Xian, Lanzhou, and to Wulumuqi. By bus to Tulufan. The Minox record stops here. We did continue to Dunjuan in the Gobi Desert, Hohot in inner Mongolia, then Beijing, and finally back to Hong Kong. At the time it was very difficult to travel in China, and we should not have done that much. But we were young. Still, it was a trip that had an important influence on the rest of my life. The next time I was back was in 2008, which you can see in my photo stream as well.

These pictures were taken with a Minox, using Ilford Pan F black and white film. They were digitized with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Dörr slide duplicator and post-processed in Aperture. Inversion was performed with Pixelmator.
