what an interesting idea Hpwwell received are they?

    3. Bakerella (66 months ago | reply)

These are always a big hit. Most people think they are peanut butter balls at first, so when they find out there's cake inside, they are really intrigued.

A few of my friends are addicted to them and have tried other cake flavors, but I love the red velvet.

Here's the recipe if you want to try them. And if you do, let me know what you think.

Okay, what's your secret to beautifully smooth and even chocolate? How do you get the whole ball covered so beautifully with no lumps bumps dips or divits???? They're just beautiful.

    7. Bakerella (66 months ago | reply)

      Wow! thanks for the compliments.
Hi Alana - I try to get them as smooth as I can by hand first. Then they stay in the fridge for several hours or the freezer if I'm short on time. This helps to keep their shape when dipped in chocolate. As for the chocolate, I use a small bowl and heat a few bars of chocolate bark at a time. Then I drop each ball in one at a time and use a spoon to cover with surrounding chocolate. Using the same spoon, I tap it off on the side of the bowl before I lay it on wax paper. There's probably a better way, but this works for me.

A friend also uses a mini ice cream scooper and hers look even smoother. They just come out smaller than mine.

You can see what the cake balls look like before I cover them in chocolate here.

By the way, they're totally worth the effort.

Inspired by your blog and photos, made red velvet *bon bons* with dark chocolate last week and they were utterly delightful -- thanks for sharing your recipe. Will try them with white chocolate next time.

I've never heard of such a thing, but am totally intrigued. Thanks for the recipe, I'm going to try this. Covered in white chocolate they would be perfect for a Valentine's Day dinner.

They do look really pretty in white chocolate, but for me they taste the best with regular chocolate. Hope you make some. You won't be disappointed.

    12. PATierney (65 months ago | reply)

Thanks for letting me know. Perhaps I'll cover them in regular chocolate and then drizzle with white. Can't wait to try these!

    13. Bakerella (65 months ago | reply)

Or… get the best of both and make half chocolate and half white and drizzle each with the other. I might even have to go make some more myself.

I bought the needed ingredients today and will be making them over the weekend.

gorgeous.. i wanted to know where you get the red velvet cake mix I've been looking for it everywhere and i cant seem to find it........ can you also use the chocolate coating to cover the cake ball and just add the flavoring or is it not the same sorry so many questions but i want everything to come out perfect for my lil girls party well close to perfect... thanks for your time

I get it at the grocery store. You can always make the cake balls with another flavor cake mix or even a homemade red velvet recipe if you can't find one in stores. It's adaptable.

Oh! We had a fiesta a few days ago and one of my friends made them! She used dark chocolate!! It was so good. I think it would be so cute for baby showers if you changed the color of the chocolate.

      Love your recipe!

thanks so much for putting the recipe on your webpage. I actually made some cake balls yesterday, mine were a big MESS!!! but still everyone LOVED them, and I have a feeling I am going to be making many more of them. (I didn't have the time to freeze them, so rolling them was a challenge.) I am sooo excited to have something to do with the extra cake and icing from making my cakes... instead of me eating it all! lol!

Hi Bakerella, thank you for this recipe! :) I tried making these tonight for my Halloween Potluck at work. I think my co-workers will be pleasantly surprised. I had such trouble with the candy melts though! Hehe, I started running out of chocolate near the end. Oh well, next time I will know better. :) Thanks for being such an inspiration! <3

Yummy. I just did some (with lollipop sticks) and decorated for halloween. Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and strawberry cake with vanilla. My kids had SO much fun turning them into eyeballs!
