My home canning experiment

My home canning experiment by bakebakebake.
Last time I canned, I thought it was taking up a lot of electricity to heat the water on the stove. I started to do this in the early afternoon and I thought, "I should do this on the wood stove!" But in order to get a boil, I had to crank the stove so hot the house was 90 degrees, and later that night it was still over 80. That's why Lidia is only in a diaper for the next few shots.

Did the water ever boil? and how did it turn out? That's the one thing I never liked when we lived in Simsbury and had an electric stove. It took forever for all that water to boil with my doing applesauce and tomatoes, that the electric bill actually went up quite a bit, but I still enjoyed it and that's another reason why I did at least two batches at a time or more if you can handle it. Nice try though.

oh yes, it did boil, and quite well at that. But it took a LONG time and I had to get the fire going REALLY hot -- much too hot for sitting in the house comfortably. Not going to do it again!

Yes, there is a big difference between an actual wood cook stove (like we had in South Strafford), as opposed to a wood heating stove. With the cookstove, you actually control your cooking by how and when you add the wood under the burners. And they are not efficient for heating! Remember when the white cat climbed into the flue and turned dark grey for months, Helina?
