• In August 1999, the Museum held a naming contest and this standing skeleton is now known as "Rosie," because the bones were found on Santa Rosa Island. The skeleton is made up of bones from at least two adult pygmy mammoths.

Dwarf Mammoth Comparison

According to this family tree, the pygmy mammoth is most closely related with the large Imperial mammoth. The domed head looks rather similar, but the shoulder blades and thoracic vertebrae of the pygmy mammoth seem to ride as high or higher than the skull which more closely resembles the Woolly mammoth.

This disparity between the pygmy and Imperial mammoth may just be because the Imperial mammoth is an illustration, or that the articulation of the pygmy skeleton isn't as "natural" as those in the illustrations.
