Scrambled Eggs with Chorizo, Cannelini Beans, Cherry Tomatoes - The
Maling Room AUD13
Located in a gorgeous post office with loads of natural light filtering through stained glass window signs of Money Orders, Post Office Boxes, etc., this buzzy little cafe at the top of Maling Road, Canterbury is a treat to visit.
The coffee there was very good, as evidenced by the lovingly drawn latte art in our caffe latte. The steamed milk was dense and creamy and the coffee frangrant and strong.
I was a bit sceptical at the fig, ginger and walnut flourless pudding, especially when the tag said gluten free. Being a lover of chewy noodles, gluten-free is like blasphemy! That said, a lot of Asian rice or bean based foods are absolutely delicious! We were pleasantly surprised by how moist the pudding was. It was made with almond meal which gave it a nice balance to the figs and the syrup it had been infused with.
The scrambled eggs were also good, but not fantastic. The chorizo with the eggs were a bit of a let down by being too salty and greasy, without the smokiness of paprika. At least the cannellini beans and roasted cherry tomatoes helped to bring some harmony into the dish.
Some reviews about this cafe didn't seem very positive, but it's a busy little cafe, where the service sometimes can't catch up to the flow of customers. They obviously are doing something right if they have that many customers!
