Black Pudding, Stewed Tomatoes, Hash Brown and a Fried Egg - Birdman
Yet another good eating place in Fitzroy!
This time, it was for brunch before a big dinner later that day.
They do a few tapas dishes too. Maybe we'll come back for that next time.
I have been craving a black pudding for a while, not having had a decent one for a while since the Black Pudding, Potato and Spring Onion Tortilla at Mr Tulk. Unfortunately, this wasn't that great either. It was good and rich, but maybe a bit too rich. I prefer the lighter version with small cubes of apples and perhaps a strong hit of cumin. The stewed tomatoes were a nice tart accompaniment though.
Julia's baked eggs with roasted sweet potato chunks was quite good. Heavy, but good. Not even the sprnkling of rocket leaves and small dollops of goats curd cheese could balance it. I think one egg would have been a more appropriate size!
The cube of butter sitting on a good toast was a quirky but practical touch. Not only does it look good in a minimalist sort of way, you're also given the choice of spreading as much of it as you want.
They must have read Matt Preston's review (below) and improved the Genevese coffee, which was strong and fragrant in a caffe latte.
