Martin Luther King Library 1977

Believe it of not this was what is now G St between 9th and 10th. Sadly the DC Government did not keep this area up and allowed it to "go to seed" during the 80's. It became a hangout for drug users, homeless men and petty criminals.

That was just one place that learned a sad lesson. Pedestrian malls need to be designed certain ways or they almost always gravitate toward unsafe conditions.

They were really popular for a while but urban planners today prefer active streets with crowded sidewalks.

The area is still pretty "seedy". The only difference is that the street is full of "car crazies" and the drunks, addicts, crooks and homeless men are still there.
