A beautifully chunky deboss. Props to the press! What is that, 540gsm?

For? - I'll post soon about that. 540gsm - I'm still relatively new to letterpressing, what exactly is 540gsm?

Can't wait to see the full size.

gsm means "grams/sq meter", the weight of the paper.

Jason Santa Maria  Pro User  says:

Sorry, to clarify a bit more, if I remember correctly, page weights for sizes based on the metric system (A0, A1, A2, etc) are measured in grams, and page weights for US sizes (Letter, Legal, Ledger, etc) are measure in pounds.

And the "weight" refers to how much a ream (500 sheets) weighs. I'm not sure, but I'd imagine the metric measurement is also for a ream.

*phew* flexing some dormant print memories.

Yes, Jason has it right. It's a reference to the weight. I wanted a heavy deboss for this card, which ended up being two-ply 740gsm but that was a little over a standard card weight.

Jason Santa Maria  Pro User  says:

Actually, thinking this through, the metric weight probably isn't for a ream seeing as how it's grams per square meter. Silly me.

BTW, is it a steeple? Be great to see the whole thing, but running a fingertip over it would be a gift. It looks beautifully done.

There's something very viscerally appealing about the dense ink and paper. Makes me want to run my fingers all over it.

jontangerine  Pro User  says:

This reference might be some use with this forum discussion, although the different ream sizes are confusing.

The card used for litho business cards usually weights about 250gsm in the UK and has a satin finish—too hard for letterpress—so the printers I use always up the weight and choose a softer card that will take the deboss well.

Beautiful card, Jon. Thanks for the clarification, Jason. Not sure what the gsm is for this paper, if I've understood correctly. (Though I do know it was printed on a Vandercook Universal III Repro Press!)

The beauty of letterpressed projects is often a reflection of the printer. Who is your talented vendor?
