To the Gay Historian and others who debate the flyers sexuality your gay detection technique would possibly not have worked too well in 1943, look and style have changed somewhat. Whatever you think one things for sure you would have wet you pants in your little boats if these were from the anti shipping squadrons as they wreaked havock with their targets.

This and similar photos in this set are wonderful photos of service men interacting with pets (and often with other men). I would not, though, assume that there is anything about these photos that suggest that the men are gay. At various points in history, particularly during wars, men have been quite comfortable interacting with other men and comfortable with their bodies (I love the shorts) and that comfort has been no indication of sexual orientation. Having been in the military, and being gay, I know that very much of the male bonding that occurs in the military is easily over-interpreted.
