Its Future is in our Hands - Live Earth

My photo for the 7th July. Watched a bit of the Live Earth concert today. Made me seriously think about what we are doing to this earth. Picture of the earth from NASA website

It's a wonderful image, for sure, but I notice that no one has seriously responded to the very serious message the image conveys -- beyond a few slogans -- as well as what prompted you to create and share this very thoughtful visual.

That's why Mother Earth is going to hell in a handbasket; we're all too busy indulging our senses, and by the time it's too late... well, it'll be too late.

In my more cynical moments, I wonder if we're not just some form of virus that Earth will eventually have to shake off somehow. Collectively, we're eating away at our own host body just like a cancer, and, if nothing changes on a massive scale beyond a few recycling laws, we are very much a mortal threat to the planet.

So that's my thought I share with you, Louise. Sorry for being so doomy and gloomy; 'tis my nature.

Fantastic idea! I went to the Live earth gig here this weekend, certainly does get you thinking.

    17. zero g (71 months ago | reply)

Actually, I wonder if the planet is in that much relative danger from us. Oh, we might very well be able to trigger a massive Extinction Level Event but the planet itself will do okay.....and our civilization could even end up as someone else's fossil fuel in a few hundred million years.....

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anoxic_event

Mind you, it's going to be really, really well documented apocalypse, I reckon what we should do is place a suitable image packed memorial in high orbit where it'll be safe for someone else to find and hopefully learn from someday....

But a grand image aussiegall, and an obvious indicator of how important our (and by that I mean humanity's; I don't bother with trivial things like nations) space programmes are to give us perspective.

It's just like the Earth Hour thing at the moment. They have a web app that lets you see a video of yourself holding a mini 3D earth in your hands.

      Very cool. Check it out.
