We went on holiday and decided to visit the north west of NSW this time which meant a visit to Lightning Ridge or as the locals say "The Ridge" What an amazing place. It sits on opal fields and has a large mining community that stake their land then set up home. Home is usually a caravan or bus to start with then they make a more permanent structure out of bits and pieces. Its like a frontier town. Most have no electricity and use generators or solar or wind power. They buy old cars and truck to get around in then when they have finished with them leave them in the filed. Amazing place for photography. Because the summer has been so wet and mild this year the place was very green. The temps reached the mid 30s when we were there and the locals informed us this had been the hottest it had been this summer. Its not unusual for the temps to be in the 40-45 degrees Celsius range at this time of the year.
