Bete Giyorgis

Bete Giyorgis by Tschechoslowakische Ausschussware.
Bete Giyorgis (St. George) church is the latest and most impressive church in Lalibela.
Lalibela is famous for its twelve rock hewn churches, dating back to the 12th and 13th century. It is to day still largely unknown how these churches were built, but the myth says that king Lalibela built them himself during the days and at night angels continued. According to some more reliable estimates ten thousands of workers must have been working here to chisel out the churches.
Today the rock-hewn churches are a UNESCO world heritage site and are being maintained with a lot of foreign money.
