365 Days - Day 70 - St David's Day
St David is the patron saint of Wales - though he wasn't Welsh. People traditionally wear daffodils or leeks on St David's Day, but I don't. Leeks are too smelly and I'm actually not that keen on daffodils. Though I have to say, these ones that I bought in the local supermarket last week do look rather pretty on the windowsill. It's the big trumpety ones I don't like.
Anyway I was photographing them on the windowsill and thought I'd do my 365 at the same time.
Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! - Happy St David's Day!

I looove everything in this self portrait of yours. Soft focus on the flowers, color, crop... composition... I love daffodils, they are usually one of the first fresh flowers to appear in spring in NW Russia where I am from.

Hi! Very nice 'springy' self-portrait indeed!
I planted a couple flowers on the balcony just the other day and I agree - dwarf daffodils are cute!

gorgeous pics - such lovely warmcolours - have just experienced my first st davids day - and had a ball. i think the original welsh daffodils are the little miniature ones which are more delicate

This is quite quite perfect. Faved. Happy St David's Day. I quite see your point about the leeks - very fine in a soup, but not necessarily under one's nose. I always did wonder how people wore them. They seemed a little... lumpy. But since being here I have discovered there there are also little leeks as well as the thunderously huge sort, so I guess those would fit nicely into a buttonhole!
Auntie P (64 months ago | reply)
@minim - you don't mean spring onions do you? ;o)

excellent image! out of curiosity, did the designer/publisher of the book contact your through flickr?
Auntie P (54 months ago | reply)
Well it's not quite as straightforward as that. They did find the photo on Flickr. Apparently the tried to contact me through Flickr but failed and went to press anyway, with Auntie P as a credit. A friend of mine spotted the book and recognised the photo. I contacted the publishers earlier in the year but heard nothing back. I tried again a couple of weeks ago and this time made contact, got my copies and payment.

Great portrait. BTW, he was Welsh:-
"Rhygyfarch, the late 11th century author of the saint's life story (see below), wrote that David was the son of sanctus rex ceredigionis, where Sanctus has been interpreted as a proper name and its owner honoured by Welsh Christians as Sandde, King of Ceredigion. However, this Latin phrase can equally well mean simply "holy king of Ceredigion". The king of Ceredigion around the time of David's birth would have been Usai. According to Rhygyfarch, Sandde was his brother, so probably only a king of part of Ceredigion. They were sons of King Ceredig, founder of Ceredigion. The saint was conceived through violence and his poor mother, Non (possibly just 'a nun'), the daughter of Lord Cynyr of Caer Goch (in Pembrokeshire), gave birth to him on a cliff top during a violent storm. David was educated at what is usually taken to be Whitland in Carmarthenshire under Saint Paulinus of Wales." (wikipedia)

Thanks for that - there are so many stories it's hard to know which one to like best.
I had an Uncle Non.

That is so awesome! I love the shot and then to find out that you wrote a book on learning Welsh in a year...well, I think that is just amazing! I was there for only 8 days and I picked up Welsh pretty quickly. I would love to actually learn it...I will keep your book in mind for my next trip there! And, a GREAT shot for the MSH too!
Auntie P (53 months ago | reply)
Thanks Laura, but I didn't write the book - they just used my photo. :-)
