Rehabber Update On The Gray Squirrels

7/12/08 Today we released the 4 squirrels we have been rehabbing since April. They are the 3 from a litter and another little one from another location. We found a wildlife sanctuary not too far from our house. There are 30 partially wooded acres. The preserve is in honor of the man's Mom who was a nature lover. He doesn't allow hunting on the property. It is beautiful there. We thanked them profusely for letting us release the squirrels there. They said we may release other animals there and were very nice. It takes a load off of our minds knowing we'll have a place to let them go.

The squirrels seemed a little quiet from the ride. We took them up in the woods where there are lots of oak trees. There were acorns all over the ground. They were really bashful about coming out of the cage. The first 3 took off one at a time. They took off like a shot. You could see them for a couple of minutes, but they disappeared into the woods. No pictures of them. The last one came out slowly and was walking around on the ground putting different stuff in its mouth and giving it a little chew. Then it tried the trees. It went all around the trees just trying its freedom out. Every now and then it would have a spurt of speed and go flying around. It hung around for a while. The last I saw it, it was 50 feet up a tree, just trying it's legs out.

What a wonderful feeling to watch the four squirrels released back out in nature. The area sounds perfect. Unfortunately, raptors love to prey on squirrels. I hope these four live a long and healthy life....kudo's to everyone involved for making this possible.
I found two small opossums a few years back and handed them over after caring for them for a week to a pro rehabber. She did an awesome job with them and called us when it was time to release them. They too shot off like a bullet and went off into their new home. It made me happy and sad.
