Ah the days! It's not visible in this pic, but does anyone remember the "Mile High" Curries' Ice Cream Shop just beyond the bridge, on the left? It was at the southwest corner of Riverside/Fletcher, and a good location from which to see - and hear - the passing Red Cars.

As a kid, I sold newspapers exactly where the Blue car on Riverside Drive is. Quit the job because the older kids got the outgoing traffic side. I have a secret story to maybe tell about these red cars.

This is a nice piece on American History. If you don't mind, can I turn this in to painting?

Yes I live here now and the Chevron Station is still a Chevron and the Richfield Station on that corner is still an ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Co) amazing those two gas stations are still there. The cement posts for the bridge supports aare still in the ground too. But it is not nearly as pretty as this. What a shame they got rid of the bridge in 1955.

The city lost part of its identity and soul when the Big Red was taken away. Thanks for posting this gem of urbanity.

Yes. What a delightful gestault of our past! The wonder of urban life is just so well revealed; way back when. The PCC technology, so ubiquitous, so rider-friendly, so vulnerable to evil manipulators. Great colour and composition: and the photographer is still alive and clicking: I assume????

what a great photo. I remember my grandmother taking me downtown to the old Crocker-Citizens Bank Bldg on Hill ( I think) taking the stairs down to the trolley station and coming out at the tunnel of Beverly Blvd and Glendale. At the corner of Fletcher and Riverside was the really great Curries ice cream with the best pistachio ice cream in both green and pink!. I'ved lived in Atwater since 1962.
