365 project -- 059 - The Overpass

365 project -- 059 - The Overpass

365 Day Photo Project — Day 59, Feb 27th, 2012. I finally made it to the park north of the UN. What a great place! I love the Murray Hill / Turtle Bay area, with all of their dead-end streets that end in drop-offs. You walk to what seems like a cliff, and then suddenly there are these steep stairs descending 2 stories to a park. Or, as I did, only 1 story, and then you're taken across FDR Drive to a sliver of shoreline with some benches and a great view! I have more shots from here, but I promise myself only 1 shot a day. Others I'll likely retry as I visit this park over the coming months. As you can see here, I'm continuing my attempt at a different style. I normally hate having *anything* blown out, but I've seen it done effectively, and I want to try different things, and challenge myself to move forward. This is how we get better, and expose ourselves to new things.

365 Project -- 057 - People in the Snow

365 Day Photo Project — Day 57, Feb 25th, 2012. Spent the day on Vassar Campus. Instead of doing what I was uppose to, I played with some new styles of photography and editing.

365 Project -- 056 - Umbrellas

365 Day Photo Project — Day 56, Feb 24th, 2012. Today, while standing in the rain taking a photo, I suddenly realized I was not getting wet. A stranger had stopped to hold an umbrella over me. I looked at him, so confused, I could not speak. "Take your shot," he said. I did, then said thank you, and he continued down the street. A second nice moment in as many days, all because I stepped outside to do some photography.

365 project -- 055 - Free Tibet Protester

365 project -- 055 - Free Tibet Protester

365 Day Photo Project — Day 55, Feb 23rd, 2012. Yesterday I spent my lunch hour photographing a protest to Free Tibet, observed on the Tibetan New Year. It started across from the UN on 1st Ave, and went past Grand Central (on 42nd) before I left them. This was one of the men leading the procession. As we walked down the streets, protestors (mostly Asian) chanted against China, over and over. They carried a procession of what looked like flag-covered coffins, likely close to 20 in all. All the while, the police blocked off intersections as we passed. I was in a state of frenzied glee, as I ran ahead, constantly snapping my shutter, unable to stop shooting. As I did so, one of the men looked me sincerely in the eyes, and say "Thank You." It really is important to help them get their message to the public. I'm sure we all know, but so quickly forget about the issue of Tibet. It was a really wonderful moment, and after leaving the march, it took me at least an hour to settle down after I was back at my desk.
