Hi,
Thanks for dropping by my sewing room, glad you like it. The drawer's interior dimensions are apx. 13" wide x 20" deep and apx. 4" tall.

Hi,
Be sure to check out the second page of my photos. There are two more photos of the top:
www.flickr.com/photos/athomesewing/4232130931/
and
www.flickr.com/photos/athomesewing/4232900986/
My plywood top measures: 32 x 57-1/2”. It completely replaces the butcher block top that came with the unit. The plywood top was attached to the cabinet with the brackets that were provided to attach the butcher block.
The extra apx. 8” was placed toward the back side of the table, creating an overhang, so that sitting there is easy.
I need to stress that the “type” of plywood for this project really is important. We used Baltic Birch Plywood which has exceptional strength and great screw-holding power, much better than typical plywoods. It was chosen because of the overhang I wanted. I can’t recall if it was ¾” thick or 5/8”. I did not want to add braces under the top, so with no other support, it’s the strength of the plywood itself that makes this work without any bowing or sagging. The plywood needs to be dense and strong to accomplish that, and the Baltic Birch Plywood is perfect for that.
One of the photos shows that the trim boards create a lip, or edge, for the pressing board and cutting mat to fit within. The way that we determined that position was to get the mat and pressboard made, then measure to see how much of an edge we needed to provide to hold them.
The lip or edge on mine is apx. 5/8” tall from the top of the plywood to the top of the trim boards. Yours could vary depending on the type of cutting mat you get, and how thick your press board is. The measurement doesn’t need to be exact, but tall enough so that both pieces will fit inside and not be able to slide off. Please notice, on the photo page about the pressboard, there was a notch cutout before it was covered with canvas. You’ll need that notch to be able to get the pressboard off and on easily.
Let me know if there are any other questions, I’m happy to be of any help.

I had to call my husband in to see this picture. When I saw that cabinet at Ikea I said "OOOOH that would be PERFECT for fat quarters!" he looked at me like I was crazy.
Glad to see I'm not the only crazy seamstress out there =0P

I saw your site a couple of years ago, and bought the same IKEA cabinet. I immediately purchased it for my art studio in Dallas, TX. About eight months ago I moved to New Mexico but couldn't bring my cabinet with me because I wouldn't have the space for it in my small apartment, and boy do I ever miss it! I now have a boyfriend who is letting me take over one of his spare bedroom for a new studio. The nearest IKEA is in Phoenix, AZ, and I am sooo tempted to drive there to pick up a new one! The things we do for the things we love! Happy Sewing!!

Happy to hear from all of you! (:
Roxona, I think you should head right over to Phoenix and get one while they are still available!
Scrapnchick, I bought it originally thinking of putting fat quarters in it, then I realized how many it would take! I then used the method of stuffing foam boards, and use the drawers for storing all sorts of project-related goodies. No matter what you do, the Varde unit is awesome!
NickieLee, I hope your room is completed already and is making you happy!

Thank you for the inspiration. I just gained a sewing room as my DD has now moved out. Now to convince DH to break out his table saw to make the cutting/pressing table.

OMG This is the Mercedes Benz of sewing rooms!!! I am (as I write this) creating a sewing room from scratch and this is incredible, I'm going to use it as a template;-) I'll probably need to ask you something along the way and it looks like you don't mind answering! OK, talk to ya later.
