Christian Marclay, the Swiss-American visual artist and composer has won worldwide acclaim for his explorations of visual media and sound. Hot on the heels of winning the prestigious Golden Lion for best artist at the 2011 Venice Biennale, he comes to Aldeburgh Music for a specially commissioned performance piece.
During a residency at Aldeburgh Music, Marclay will build a musical performance based on a set of short film clips. Marclay is as interested in the journey as in the final result and these film clips will be the seeds from which the performance will develop.
Four exceptional musicians will accompany him on this journey: Steve Beresford, John Butcher, Mark Sanders and Alan Tomlinson, who, like Marclay, believe in the power of improvisation to unleash the imagination. Also joining in the mix will be local marching band, Suffolk Phoenix Brass, as well as live electronics.
Preceding the premiere is a separate performance of two other Marclay works; Ephemera performed by Steve Beresford and Manga Scroll (2010) interpreted by vocalist Elaine Mitchener.
