Ellie snack

Ellie snack by Jacques S G.
On the 27th August 2008 was my first tour with people from Poland. The girls in the group were absolutely stunning! Maybe that is why we had such an awesome day!

Here you can clearly see just how destructive ellies can be. This guy pushed over a tree and did it just to feed on some of the branches. What you are seeing here is how he rolls the branch in his mouth and then stripping it from the bark.

What a beautiful shot of a magnificent ele!!! I know they are destructive - but if he has ingested a few seeds in this meal, he will be planting them a little later and further down his path!

Nasieku, this is true, he will seed a couple of trees along his path. BUT.
Some years ago I collected a scientist that came to do her masters studies here in the Park on the impact the elles have on their environment. On the way from O.R. Tambo Int. Airport to here she lectured me on how brutal we as South Africans are wanting to go ahead with a cull. I at that time didn't say much - my job was to get her to the Kruger and as she was the scientist and I the guide, who was I to argue?
Six months later I was lucky enough to collect her again to take her back to the airport for her flight back.
During this drive she apologized for her lecture on the first day. Her research has shown that 75% of the trees in the Kruger are Younger than 15 years old. Thus, the elles are taking out the old trees and replacing them with new ones, but the new trees do not have enough time to grow and become old trees as there are just too many of them and their impact is thus too great on the environment.
I did a full report on this matter at Animal Gateway group as well as on my website at www.atlarge.co.za on the discussion pages should you and others be interested in that.
Thanks for all your comments - greatly appreciated!
