My mom is a hiker. Cairns are used to mark summits, and sometime also paths or specific points along the trail.
My mom decided that she really likes building cairns, and likes how they look. When she and my dad bring yard waste to the dump, she usually comes home with some new stones. I think my dad finds her a bit nuts, but humors her anyways.
There are now a couple of dozen cairns in my parents' yard. I call this area the "field of cairns."
