Holy crap. That's very cool. What the heck is it, exactly??
Vincent Anton / aka Astrovine (88 months ago | reply)
Well, I have avoided the actual US Dept of Interior terminology, since it was written in 1957, described as a "Gloryhole of 72 feet in diameter".
It is an overflow drain to avoid water spilling over the dam face. More facts = www.usbr.gov/mp/berryessa/facts.html and here = www.usbr.gov/dataweb/dams/ca10170.htm

even better in bw what a big sucking hole that is Vincent. Indeed good that they keep it fenced of. what happens when a person would be sucked into it?
zalgon (88 months ago | reply)
Guido: severe bruising at minimum.

My english vocabulary isn't that great, so I had to google for «gloryhole» to see whats wrong with the terminolgy. sight. Now I know.

I live near Lake Berryessa (between Winters, CA and Napa) in northern CA. It is indeed a "glory hole", deffinately something to check out if you're in the area during the winter/springtime.

wow thats cool!

still a horrifying thought for a hole to appear in the water...
CatsFive (80 months ago | reply)
I have a silly question... no doubt you'd be killed if you fell into it, right? It goes down into a lot of turbines, I would imagine...
JennaMoser (80 months ago | reply)
In Winters, CA lore (true story actually) a person committed suicide by going down inside that thing.

I just realized that this totally looks like one of those worms from Dune. At least, from the thumbnail it does.

"glory holes" are not unusual in a lot of dams. instead of spilling the water over the dam, it gets sucked into the "glory hole" - the unfortunate name predates the more common glory hole that also involves another sort of sucking.
