That question remains, but that's why I titled the event a 'time-sink'. I also see it as a vortex since the physical water's force generates electrical power driving turbines at the bottom of the dam.

I recognized this immediately. I've been comming here my whole life. Try hiking to the top of the ridge. There's a large rock straight up from the dam, called eagle rock. You can take pictures directly over the glory hole from there. Follow Cold Creek (UC Davis preserve entrance) up to the ridge on the right. Glory hole or not, it's a wonderful hike with outstanding views. Nice capture!
