Van de Amazone wil ik graag zo'n lekkere gifgroene foto zien. Waarom is alles zo donker?

Yes, these are clouds. With a funny name: popcorn clouds, as they look like popcorn. Signs of a healthy forest. Trees exhale moisture, starting in the morning. That moisture gradually condenses to form clouds. That popcorn pattern tells something about the daytime of the photo: small popcorn clouds like here are just before noon local time (photo taken at 13.44 GMT = 10.44 a.m. local time). They gradually merge to form a uniform layer of clouds and by 3 to 4 p.m. local time the daily rain starts.

The photo appears so relatively dark as during the past time the ISS has been orbiting close to the terminator, the border line between night and day. Even slightly off the direct ground track the area still is relatively dark then. Such a terminator orbit phase lasts for about two weeks and then there can be shots in bright daylight (of the area directly below the station) again.

@vaya2012 The Amazone delta area is not so much affected by deforestation as the regular floods over hundreds of square kilometers make sure that there is not much land that could be used for agriculture. Therefore, deforestation is most severe hundreds of kilometers upstream (inland), particularly intensive presently in the border zone of Brazil and Bolivia.
