Bali is the only Hindu dominated island in the Indonesian Archipelago. Their Hinduism is different than that practiced in India, though...one of the main differences is that they do not recognize Krishna...they venerate Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, and a multitude of the other gods and goddesses. But they have their own take on the religion. I believe it is the only place in the world, that is a majority Hindu culture, without it being sustained by a native Indian population. The Balinese adopted the religion hundreds of years ago from Indian traders. There is also a significant Chinese Buddhist culture, and a minority Muslim population too. Most of the rest of Indonesia is Muslim, and several years ago there were terrible Islamist bombings in this lovely country that killed several hundreds really close to were we are staying...the security is tight to get into the resorts here...reminded me of the car searching procedures that were instituted at the bigger hotels in Punjab, and probably the rest of India, after the terrorists slaughters in Mumbai a few years ago.
