I love taking portraits (although I can be very shy about it), but I often end up shooting wide open, enjoying the bokeh, but loosing the context - like this. so I'm working on taking environmental portraits and toning down the DoF. here I've tried to give a sense of the family's hallway with the two rooms of the house in which she and her three sons live, eat and sleep.

@ Tom: yeah, I spent an hour or so talking with her and her three sons this afternoon. she has been a refugee in this city for 14 years. the family lives in the two tiny rooms off to the right behind her. they cannot work, cannot venture out of their house much, and the sons have never had a proper job in their lives.

This is a gorgeous image and a lovely portrait- nice skills, well done capturing the background without losing her in the clutter. Her expression is so strong and touching- that sadness coupled with quiet determination that I've seen among so many mothers in difficult situations. Sensitive but telling a story- this has to be one of my all-time favourites among your images.
