..I'm not so sure about this now...I added the fuse because I thought the viewer may end up focussing on the empty CS gas canister and wonder what it was (you can see in the original photo that it was taken from)..I thought it would add more clarity if I turned it into an explosive..

..I'm worried the fuse looks a bit too 'cartoon'..should I remove it and stick with the original subject...what do you think??

I like the fuse. I agree with your concern about focusing more on what the canister is without the fuse instead of focusing on the detail and subject of the stencil. I say keep it but like Irena, I don't stencil. I do like and can appreciate the creativity and focus that goes into producing one.
