Footprints
If you choose to publish this photo I'd like to be attributed as Joshua Davis, and if you include a link please send people to jdavis.info. This is not required, but is highly appreciated since I give my work away for free.
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

It's almost as if the subject or anything of interest was just left out - it's an empty canvas looking for something to draw your attention. If the footsteps are supposed to be of interest, why are they so tiny? Also, the picture is titled counter clockwise a little, which seems like a mistake. The tiny white pebble right at the bottom a little to the left ot the middle draws my attention and creates more interest than anything I assume you're doing on purpose.

Bland enough to make a good inspirational poster, but the speck-of-pepper bird in the sky kept making me wipe my screen.

I like the division between water and sand, it's captured perfectly. However the sky is completely jacked.

The bad exposure is the only thing about this that isn't a cliche.

I thought the purpose of posting was to encourage others to offer constructive criticism so the person who posted can benefit from other peoples perspective on ways to make improvements! Ouch!
sharply_done (70 months ago | reply)
Yeah, but that's not the purpose of the DeleteMe group. You've gotta be prepared for comments like this when you post there.
That being said, I like the shot - the colour and texture work well here. Crop/clone out the bottom pebble and speck-of-bird and you've got a winner!

ohhhhhhhhh josh, this is sooooooooo nice!
may i suggest you put the poem "a psalm for life" on the description?
JoshuaDavisPhotography (70 months ago | reply)
@sharply_done
That's the purpose, but many people just use it as a place to be funny, or vent their anger. One person on this photo complained about the speck of bird (which I had noticed) and the white rock, which I hadn't noticed. Next time I can be careful of that. The reason I go to DM is because of the one or two useful comments I can get.
Tsjeu (70 months ago | reply)
These comments, if you are willing to listen to them, are more useful then the "boring" you comment in return.
JoshuaDavisPhotography (70 months ago | reply)
Yes, that comment of mine may have been boring, but a boring image deserves a boring comment. In fact you basicly said boring about my picture, except you used one more word.
Tsjeu (70 months ago | reply)
One more word, and 3,341 boring pictures. And in your case it´s decent advice, get off the beaten track.
Now find 3,341 rubber gloves that look like mine.
JoshuaDavisPhotography (70 months ago | reply)
Yeah I know it's decent advice. In fact it's been a long time since I added a boring/unoriginal photo to DM. Which tells me when someone comments that it helps me realize what is boring, and what is not.

really dig the exposure.
pleasant.
i'd love Hourman to give us pointers on how to expose a shot such as this so that the sand doesn't end up black while catching the sky (which may have been white anyway, and, at least for me, isn't the focus of the photograph).
