DOCUMENTING THE CITY: PREFACE

[ PREFACE ]

Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport

Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport is an exhibition and online gallery and archive to celebrate Newport's coming of age as a City, showcasing art works from the permanent collection of the Newport Museum and Art Gallery.

DOCUMENTING THE CITY: CONTENTS

Documenting the City explores the visual representation of Newport and its region from the eighteenth century to the present. We also explore the art world of Newport, with particular reference to the history of the Newport College of Art.

Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport provides a unique perspective upon the making of modern Newport. We trace the evolution of the modern city from the turbulent origins of the industrial frontier and Chartism, through the change and challenges of the twentieth century, to the current prospects of the new entrepreneurial City of Newport.

Newport has risen to the challenge of modernity across the generations with a passion and a vision all of its own.

Documenting the City is the third project in the series Art and Society in Newport (- read more here ), produced by John Wilson as Guest Curator, in collaboration with Roger Cucksey, Keeper of Art, Newport Museum and Art Gallery. All views expressed in art_newport on flickr and Documenting the City are those of the Guest Curator.

A note on the responsible use of images for public education purposes: Documenting the City represents our first use of the Internet to explore a widened audience and online conversations for works of art in the permanent collections of the Newport Museum and Art Gallery. This includes the user comment features within flickr. It is early days yet for the use of images from public art collections online and best practice guidelines have yet to become codified. A precautionary note is in order therefore. All images are reproduced here for public education purposes; are subject to Copyright, Newport Museum and Art Gallery, South Wales; and are reproduced in low resolution image quality as has become the established practice of public museum and art gallery websites. Picture research enquiries are referred to the Newport Museum and Art Gallery, which uses the Bridgman Art Library as an agent for some of the works in its collections.

Finally we hope that you enjoy exploring our online resources. We also look forward to using these online resources as an ongoing archive for further research and projects. We are seeking project partners and urge anyone interested in supporting this future work to contact the Keeper of Art, Newport Museum and Art Gallery.
