WHAT IS PAKISTANI ART?
Here are few examples from S, Mansur's 1974-81 works which perhaps were the first attempts to answer the above question in certain time and region. Art is not only what we see in museum or art galleries, art exist among people, variation in everything among communities is the variation in their art and these zonal variations or shades also has their rise and fall or merging in other zones and era resulting new shades. I found myself in region in the time when this zone is called Pakistan, so in 1974 I decided to study and record (photographically, etc.) everything in Pakistan that such data will help me to create such art works that can record the zonal variations of my era in archetypal manner which later I found is also an anthropological approach, that’s why I call my work “art and science”. Thus I deserve the honorary PhD degree in anthropology and fine art.
Regarding art terminology like: sculpture, construction, collage, performance, installation or cubism, dada-ism, sur-realism, structuralism, etc are not new that such concepts were present with different zonal shades in all societies since ancient time. Such art terminology-shades have now changed that materialism has replaced spirituality behind the work, but my effort is not such, insha-Allah time will show my ideology of good intentions.
