Father and Son: STS-1 and STS-135

The picture we waited 30 years to complete. (hi reddit!)

UPDATE 7/14/2011: I've gotten many, many requests for permission to use the photo, so instead of responding to each individual request, I've changed the license on this picture to Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs. This allows you to download it and share it with others as long as you attribute the photo appropriately and do not change it in any way or use it commercially.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. We are humbled by the response!

Nice composition! Really ... and thinking that was 30 years ago ... seems yesterday! Time flies ... and so does the Shuttle ... ;-)

epic. to be able to share in something so wonderful with your dad both beginning and end. I am jealous - both that you watched not only the first but also the last mission - but also that you did it with your father, because mine passed away in 2004 and I know we would have had a "farewell to the shuttle" party had he still been around..

kudos to you and your dad. I wish you many more happy years together. :)

From David Waters / Space reporter / former prime space shuttle contractor media relations.

Everyone I used to work alongside in the shuttle program that I've forwarded this shot think its so cool, and get chills.

What gave you the idea to replicate your 1981 shot? Does your family have any connection to the space program? Did you see more than just these two launches? I'd love to hear some details behind these amazing moments captured here. ...and your dad's and your full names. -David davidgwaters at me dot com
