"My addictions ruined my life so far. I promised myself I'd never do it; my mom passed away from heroin addiction." -- Roland
Roland, 21, was raised in Brooklyn, both his parents where from Russia and Jewish. When his mom died from an overdose he was raised by his Grandfather who died when he was 11, leaving Roland in a group home. “I signed myself out of the group home, used drugs to survive the streets, mostly just weed.” An ex girlfriend, the mother of his son, introduced him to Heroin.
He came to Hunts Point a year ago and has been homeless the last few months.
When I asked him how to describe himself he answered after a long pause, “I have potential but I don’t know how to use it.”
