John was released from prison two weeks ago into a shelter in Hunts point. He had served twenty years for drug distribution and assault on an officer ("thats what they called it, but I am the one who ended up beat up and near death"). Polite, articulate, and talkative we chatted for a long time.
Now panhandling he was diagnosed in prison as a schizophrenic. "I am scared outside of jail, I had three regular meals and a bed. I won't go back, I won't ever do drugs again, but I miss it"
